PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a superior user interface having a speech mode for operating speech as a communication mode and a data mode for operating data communication by fully utilizing the advantage that communication in both modes is valid. SOLUTION: This is a portable telephone set, having a speech mode for operating speech as a communication mode and a data mode for operating data communication. This portable telephone set is provided with an instruction inputting part 14 provided with a data mode key for switching the communication mode to the data mode, a liquid crystal display 15 for displaying information to a user, a switching part 16f for switching the communication mode to the data mode, when the data mode key is pressed in the speech mode, a deciding part 16e for deciding the validity/invalidity of communication in the data mode, and a data mode stopping part 16f for switching the communication mode to the speech mode when the decided result of the deciding part 16e indicates the invalidity of the communication in the data mode.
