PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a snow-melting agent uniformly spreadable and highly settable on road surface, easy to handle, and useful for preventing road freezing, melting ice or snow by including sodium chloride in an amount greater than a specified level and by being constituted of granules having an average size within a specified range. SOLUTION: This snow-melting agent is such one as to contain >80 wt.% of sodium chloride and consist of granules 6 with an average size of 1-10 mm. More precisely, this snow-melting agent consists of columnar granules with an axial average length of 2-10 mm and the average major axis of the section perpendicular to the axis of 2-6 mm. This snow-melting agent is produced by compression molding of the sodium chloride 125μm in average particle size as a byproduct from the manufacturing process for sodium chlorate by electrolytic method to afford a compression molded form 4 which, in turn, is cut with cutting rolls 5, 5'. The quantity of this snow-melting agent to be spread is pref. 5-50 g/m2.
