PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound having profitable effects for such properties of liquid crystal mixtures especially chiral smectic mixtures as induction anisotropy and/or melting point. SOLUTION: This compound is represented by the formula R1-(-A1)a-T-(A2-)b(M-A3-)cR2 [T is 4-fluorothiazol-2,5-diyl or the like; R1 and R2 are each H or a 2-20C alkenyl (having asymmetric C) or the like and one or two non-terminal CH2 can be substituted with O or the like except that two adjacent CH2 substituted heterozygously; A1 to A3 are each (substituted) phenylene-1,4-diyl or the like; M is OCH2 or the like; (a) to c are each 0 or 1 and a+b+c is 1 or 2] such as 4-fluoro-2-(4-hexylphenyl)-5-(4-octiloxyphenyl-1,3-tiazol. The compound represented by the formula is obtained by e.g. reacting 1-octanol with 4-fluoro-2-(4-hexyphenyl)-5-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1,3-tiazol.
