PURPOSE: A power train of an automatic transmission is provided to be compact and to output a transmission gear ratio with four-forward speed and on backward speed without a secondary speed change gear unit. CONSTITUTION: A power train for an automatic transmission contains an input shaft(2) receiving power from an engine through a torque converter and arranges a single pinion planetary gear set(4) and a double pinion planetary gear set(6) on the same shaft as the input shaft. The single and double pinion planetary gear sets use a sun gear(8) and a planetary carrier(10) in common and the sun gear is variably connected to the input shaft through a first frictional factor(16). The planetary carrier is selectively connected to a transmission housing(20) through a second frictional factor(18) and variably connected to the input shaft through a fourth frictional factor(26) at the same time. A ring gear(12) of the double pinion planetary gear set is connected to a transfer drive gear(14) for being used as an output factor. A ring gear(22) of the single pinion planetary gear set is selectively connected to the transmission housing through a third frictional factor(24) and variably connected to the input shaft through a fifth frictional factor(28) at the same time.
