PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform smooth tilting control of a swash plate of a variable displacement swash plate hydraulic rotary machine by decreasing the lateral component of force generated on tilting control pistons over all areas of a tilting range of the swash plate. SOLUTION: First and second projection plates 22, 23 are arranged on a swash plate 21 so as to be projected diametrally outward of a flat sliding surface 21A. Surfaces of the projection plates 22, 23 against which ends of tilting control pistons 16B, 17B are abutted are tapered in respect to the flat sliding surface 21A of the swash plate 21 with different angles. In such a case, the piston abutting surface are substantially perpendicular to axes of the tilting control pistons 16B, 17B when the wash plate 21 is tilted by half of the maximum tilting angle.
