PURPOSE: A continuously variable transmission for a vehicle improves a power transmitting ratio to a driven pulley by reducing the rotating force of an engine transmitted to a driving pulley. CONSTITUTION: A speed reducing device has a sun gear(16) directly connected to an input shaft and a double pinion carrier(17) connected to a driving pulley(22). A friction element(C1) selectively maintains a locking state with a long pinion(19), thereby reducing the output against the input of a transmission on advance running. Further, a braking device(B1) makes a ring gear(21) operate as a reacting element, selectively. Thus, the rpm(revolutions per minute) of an engine is sufficiently reduced on advancing and reversing.
