PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make followable to all movements of a tape reel generated inside a casing, to make a tape cassette have a reel brake having high reliability, to eliminate unnecessary movements of the reel brake, and moreover to make executable a smooth brake releasing operation, to make normally maintainable a brake function as well and to make executable a sure brake operation without generating any trouble for handling. SOLUTION: In this tape cassette, an arm parts 7 are provided on both sides of the main body of a reel brake member 17 via a hinge part 72, a brake claw part 71 is provided at the tip end of each arm part, and moreover an opening hole part 70 into which a device side brake release operating member is inserted is formed. Further, an upper surface part 171 and a lower surface part 172 abutting and sliding on the inner surface of upper and lower casings are included, recessed parts 18 are provided at a position corresponding to the outer peripheral edge of a tape reel in the both sides of the front surface side of the upper surface part 171, and also a butt fitting recessed part 19 is provided in the front surface side of the lower surface part 172 in accordance with a holding rib 102 provided in the front surface side of the reel brake sliding area of the lower casing 31 along a tape reel housing area 10.
