PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for switching keyboard with which the external keyboard of a computer is switched, without operating a virtual keyboard on a display part when the external keyboard is connected/ disconnected. SOLUTION: When a keyboard connection/disconnection detecting circuit 14 detects that an external keyboard 10 is disconnected from a main body, it is reported to an arithmetic circuit 16. Corresponding to this notice, the arithmetic circuit 16 displays a virtual keyboard on one part of the screen of a display device 20 and starts the control of the virtual keyboard on the screen by a pointing device 18. When it is detected the external keyboard 10 is connected, the arithmetic circuit 16 erases the virtual keyboard from the screen and starts using the external keyboard 10. Thus, an operator can provide similar operability, without being conscious of the presence/absence of the external keyboard 10 (without changing the setting of OS or application software).
