PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phase difference plate attainableλ/4 orλ/2 in the whole wavelength region to be used. SOLUTION: In this phase difference plate on which at least two optical anistropic layers A, B are laminated, retardation values of the optical anistropic layer A measured at the wavelengths of 450 nm and 550 nm, Re450A and Re550A, and retardation values of the optical anistropic layer B measured at the wavelengths of 450 nm and 550 nm, Re450B and Re 550B, satisfy the following equations, (1) and (2), (1) Re550A<Re550B, (2) Re450A/Re 550A-Re450 B/Re550B>0.1, and besides, the direction in which the refractive index in the face of the optical anistropic layer A becomes maximum is substantially crossed at right angles with the direction in which the refractive index in the face of the optical anistropic layer B becomes maximum.
