This method of enhancing amyloid precursor protein processing along a non-amyloidogenic pathway in patients suffering from, or at risk of developing, Alzheimer's disease, by reducing bA4 production in patients suffering from, or at risk of developing, Alzheimer's disease comprising administering to the patient an effective, non-toxic amount of the acetonitrile compound [R-(Z)]-a-(methoxyimimo)-a-(1-azabicyclo[2.2.2]oct-3-yl)acetonitrile.
