PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin film magnetic head in which the sensitivity distribution of a spin valve element can be made satisfactory, and an output can be made large, and any noise or hysteresis can be reduced. SOLUTION: This spin valve head is provided with a spin valve element 3 and a pair of electrode layers 10 and 11 electrically connected with both edges of the width direction of the element 3, and a tantalum film 8 is laminated at the uppermost part as a protecting layer in this element 3, and the pair of electrode layers 10 and 11 are overlapped on both edge parts of the element 3. The oxidized tantalum existing in an area in which the electrode layers 10 and 11 are overlapped is removed before the formation of the electrode layers 10 and 11 so that any electric resistance between the electrode layers 10 and 11 and the element 3 can be reduced.
