PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sensor which can discriminate the direction of a rectangular member having an opaque layer on its surface. SOLUTION: Light is projected upon a chip resistor which is a rectangular member from a fiber unit 22 and the light scattered or reflected in the ceramic substrate of the chip resistor is received by means of another fiber unit 23 arranged nearly perpendicularly to the unit 22. When the unit 23 receives the scattered or reflected light, it is discriminated that the chip resistor is laid with its rear surface upward and, when the unit 23 does not receive the light rays, it is discriminated that the resistor is laid with its front surface upward.
