PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for identifying materials whereby characteristics of various materials can be efficiently marked without being influenced and the materials can be easily and correctly identified even after raw materials are blended, synthesized or processed. SOLUTION: One or a plurality of marking substances as information for identifying a host material, and a reference marking substance for determining a mixture of the marking substances are mixed to the host material to be identified (step 2). After the host material is used (step 3), the host material to which the marking substances and reference marking substance are mixed, or a substance containing the host material is analyzed, thereby detecting the marking substances (step 4). The host material is identified from the mix result of the detected marking substances (step 5).
