Aqueous two-phase system for purifying apolipoproteins

The first step in the process for purifying an amphiphilic compound is to mix a starting material containing the amphiphilic compound with a first polymeric material, water and at least one of a second polymeric material and a surfactant. The first polymeric material and the second polymeric material and/or surfactant are immiscible in the resulting primary aqueous solution. The primary aqueous solution is maintained for a period of time sufficient for separating the phases formed. The phase containing the main portion of the amphiphilic compound and the second polymeric material and/or surfactant is removed. The second polymeric material and/or surfactant are separated from the amphiphilic compound, and subsequently recycled to the initial mixing step. This process can be used in the purification of apolipoprotein A (ApoA) or apolipoprotein E (ApoE).
