PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus in which an SPF value can be evaluated quickly, at low costs and objectively by a method wherein a sample injection process is provided, a spectrum measuring process is provided, a calculation process is provided and the SPF value is calculated by using a specific expression. SOLUTION: A light source 10 radiates ultraviolet rays L1 at a wavelength of 290 to 400 nm. A spectroscope 12 selects a desired wavelengthλof the ultraviolet rays L1 radiated from the light source 10. A sample cell 14 is installed in the sample chamber 24 of a spectrophotometer in such a way that a dilution sample 22 is irradiated with ultraviolet rays L2 from the spectroscope 12. A CPU 34 accesses a program storage part 26 so as to read out a specific expression, it accesses a storage parts 28, 30 and 32 so as to read out respective data, and it claculates the SPF equivalent value of the dilution sample 22. The ultraviolet rays L2 which are incident on the dilution sample 22 and which are radiated from the spectroscope 12 are reflected and transmitted to all directions. Since most of diffused and transmitted light L3 can be taken into by an integrating sphere 16, the SPF equivalent value can be measured more precisely. In addition, when the sample is measured by using the spectrophotometer, many samples can be tested quickly and at low costs as compared with conventional cases.
