An operating system (8), e.g. a windows system, is used to run the application program which has a software component (9) called by a container (10) via an interfaces (11) between the operating system and the container and a standard interface (12) between the container and the application program. The container provides a run environment for the application program. The software component (9) contains image processing software to manipulate medical images (16) of different image formats, of different number of lines, number of pixels per line and pixel depth of from 8 to 32 bits. The image processing software processes image reference data e.g. image offset, image and segment referenced graphics or gray value conversion.
