PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain new mosaic bacteria by transferring a plurality of DNA fragments of donor bacteria into the genome of recipient bacteria to afford useful properties and/or characters such as to be usable in producing natto by using Bacillus subtilis as the recipient bacteria and Bacillus natto as the donor bacteria. SOLUTION: The new mosaic bacteria having desired properties and/or characters are obtained by transferring a plurality of DNA fragments of donor bacteria into the genome of recipient bacteria. When Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus natto are used as the recipient bacteria and donor bacteria, respectively, the new mosaic bacteria having giant colony-forming ability, high protease productivity, and the ability to produce natto odor and cobwebingnesses through fermenting boiled soybean are capable of producing natto. The illustrated new mosaic bacteria are obtained by the following practice: because the respective genomic structures of Bacillus subtilis 168 strain and Bacillus natto are similar to each other, by making use of such transforming ability of Bacillus subtilis that Bacillus subtilis incorporates a DNA and integrates the DNA into its own genome, such a portion of Bacillus natto as to be homologous to the genome of Bacillus subtilis is replaced for the corresponding portion of the Bacillus subtilis under artificial control, and among the resulting transformants, the aimed strain having the properties of Bacillus natto is then screened. |
