PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively remove mercury from hydrocarbon with a simple process by contacting the liquid hydrocarbon including mercury with zinc sulfide and water. SOLUTION: The mercury is removed from (A) the liquid hydrocarbon including mercury by contacting (A) with (B) zinc sulfide in the weight ratio of (B):(A)=0.000001:1000-1000:1000 and (C) water in the weight ratio of (C):(A)=0.01:1000-10,000,000:1000. Crude oil, virgin naphtha, lamp oil, light oil, vacuum distillate of petroleum, atmospheric residue, condensate of natural gas or the like are enumerated as the component (A). Both elementary mercury and ionized mercury are enumerated as the form that can be removed. The concentration of the mercury in the component (A) is usually 2-1000(W/V) ppb, preferably 5-100 ppb. Natural water, tap water or distilled water is enumerated as the component (C) and water processed with ion-exchange resin is also used.
