PURPOSE: An apparatus for de-interlacing digital image data is provided to improve image quality by performing interpolation based on motion amount and motion direction. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for de-interlacing digital image data includes a field data provider(21), a Bdpd finder(22), a Bdpd adder(23), a central filter(24), a motion enlarger(25), an edge detector(26), a mix generator(27), and a vertical line converter(28). The field data provider(21) stores two previous field data and current field data. The Bdpd finder(22) calculates BD(brightness difference) of previous field and PD(pattern difference). The Bdpd adder(23) determines amount of motion by mapping BD and PD into a threshold value. The central filter(24) collects portion with motion with removing noise. The motion enlarger(25) enlarges effect of motion. The edge detector(26) provides auxiliary information needer for motion information detection for motion amount calculation. The mix generator(27) adds output of the edge detection and the motion enlarger when full motion. The vertical line converter(28) operates according to the output of the mix generator and current field data.
