PURPOSE: An elevator is provided which has a hoist installed on a counterweight to counterbalance the weight of a cab through a rope, which hoist raises and lowers the cab through the rope and easily make it possible to change or substitute parts of the hoist. CONSTITUTION: An elevator of which hoist comprises a driving motor (105), a traction pulley (103) having a rotary shaft different from that of the driving motor and having the rope wound thereon, and a power transmission device (127) for transmitting power from the driving motor (105) to the traction pulley (103), and wherein even in an elevator of the heavy load class, the driving motor can be reduced in size since the load of the cab (201) does not act on the driving motor (105).
