PURPOSE: A mobile communication system having an ATM based access structure is provided to improve the usage efficiency of a physical link and the efficiency of traffic transfer and to enable multimedia traffic processing. CONSTITUTION: An ATM cell processing unit(170), comprised of an ATM cell switch(172) and an AAL2(ATM Adaptive Layer 2) cell processing unit(180), carries out ATM & AAL2 routing and switching and AAL2 multiplexing. The ATM cell switch(172) receives ATM cells from an RF-ATM conversion unit and determines the routing path of the received ATM cells according to switching information provided from a BTS(Base station Transceiver Subsystem) main processor. The AAL2 cell processing unit(180) transmits the ATM cell streams output from the ATM cell switch(172) to an ATM interface(190) directly. The AAL2 cell processing unit(180) is comprised of an ATM interface unit(181), an AAL2 synchronization unit(182), a look-up memory(183), a CID(Channel Identification Offset Field) conversion unit(184), an AAL2 switching unit(186), an AAL2 format unit(187) and an IATM(Internal ATM) format unit(188).
