PURPOSE: A laser unit and an insulation block used therein are provided to reduce the cost of manufacturing by bypassing the step of using an optical device. CONSTITUTION: A laser unit and an insulation block used therein includes a package(16), an insulation block(30), a sub mount(46), and a laser device(47). The package(16) includes a reference plane(18). The insulation block(30) includes first and second surfaces. The first surface contacts the reference plane. The sub mount(46) contacts the second reference plane. The laser device(47) contacts the sub mount. The sub mount further includes a combining surface which is formed parallel to the optical axis of the laser device, and the combining surface contacts the second surface. The reference plane further includes a depression member, which holds the insulation block inside of itself.
