PURPOSE: A method and device for registering the outer characteristics of a vehicle in a road toll unit is provided to record the number plate of a vehicle or other distinctive characteristics. CONSTITUTION: A method and device for registering the outer characteristics of a vehicle in a road toll unit comprises a plurality of trasceiver(7) for microwave including antenna, two light fittings(6), video cam(8) headed for approaching traffic flows which is attached to the side of a stand so as to record a vehicle not permitted to move to a shoulder, two video cams(9) attached to the top of the center of a stand and headed for the road, three-couple video cams(10) for recording of approaching and receding traffic flows, center device(11) for process and control of recorded data, unit(15) for storing in compress of a recorded video image, controlling and analysis, and sensor(16) for sensoring of a passing vehicle. During the check-up and payment operation, the vehicle is followed by successive video recordings. In these recordings, a marker is connected to the vehicle. The same marker is connected to the image of the number plate and to an image of the physical shape of the vehicle(4). In the event of incorrect payment, a search may be based on both the image of the number plate and the associated image of the physical shape of the vehicle, which are connected together by means of the successive following of the position. The class of the vehicle may thus be determined, in accordance with a classification scheme based on the physical properties of the vehicle, from the image of the external characteristics of the vehicle for determining the toll fee.
