PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a serial scan type printer performing printing by scanning with a carriage mounted with a print head in which print operation speed is enhanced without increasing the size of a motor in a scanning drive source and the size of the printer. SOLUTION: Electromagnets 200, 203 are arranged on the end side in the scanning range of a carriage 116 and corresponding permanent magnets 201, 202 are provided on a carriage 116. The electromagnets are conducted in an accelerating/decelerating region provided at the inverting region of reciprocal scanning with the carriage so that a repelling force acts on the carriage 116. According to the structure, the carriage can be inverted quickly at a short accelerating/decelerating interval even if a small motor is used and print scanning speed can be enhanced.
