A unit determines the level in a dispensing cartridge, from pressure changes initiated by a valve. The memory (8) stores pressure/time functions for the cartridge(s). These are the pressure relaxation functions obtained by measurement on prompt shutting of a solenoid valve which initially connects the cartridge empty volume to a pressure source. Each decay function corresponds to a definite level of contents in the cartridge. The level is determined by comparison of the measured- with stored functions. Each type of cartridge is pref. tested to establish the decay function esp. when empty, for reliable indication of the empty state.
