The invention relates to the alignment of mechanical components. The method according to the invention comprises the following steps: (a) providing one of the elements with a regular polygonal recess (4, 32) having N faces; b) disposing on the other element (1, 27) N freely rotating cylindrical rollers (5, 6, 7, 28, 29); c) moving one of the elements with respect to the other in such a way as to introduce the N cylindrical rollers (5, 6, 7, 28, 29) into the said polygonal recess (4, 32), each of the rollers substantially facing a corresponding vertex of the polygonal recess; and d) turning one of the elements (1, 27) with respect to the other through an angle substantially equal to 180/N DEG .
