PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a phenylacetylene compound having alkyl groups on the skeleton, having a large anisotropic refractive index, capable of being easily mixed with other liquid crystals and having advantageous stability against light. SOLUTION: A compound of formula I (A1-A12 are each H, F, a 1-10C alkyl or the like; R1, R2 are each H, F, cyano or the like), for example, a compound of formula II. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting a compound of formula III with a compound of formula IV (X is I, Br or the like) preferably in an amount of 0.5-2 fold equivalents in the presence of a palladium catalyst (for example, palladium chloride), a basic substance (for example, triethylamine) and a copper (I) iodide respectively in amounts of 0.001-0.1 fold equivalent, 1-20 fold equivalents and 0-0.1 fold equivalent that of the compound of formula IV, if necessary in a reaction solvent (for example, acetonitrile) at 20-120 deg.C for 1-48 hr. A liquid crystal composition preferably contains at least the compound of formula I.
