PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic focusing device capable of quickly focusing on an image area to be focused without using a range-finding detector. SOLUTION: In this automatic focusing device, an area (AF area) to be focused by a photographer out of the image pickup area of a color image sensor 103 is provided, a 1st AF area image in a frame image-picked up at the optional position of a focusing lens 101 and a 2nd AF area image in a frame image- picked up by finely moving the lens 101 from the optional point are prepared, and the dot image distribution coefficients of the 1st and the 2nd area images are respectively obtained by AF processing systems 104 to 111, then a distance to a focusing point is estimated from diaphragm aperture diameter information, light receiving surface distance information on a diaphragm surface and the dot image radius R1 of the 1st AF area image or the dot image radius R2 of the 2nd AF area image, and a direction where the focusing point eixsts is estimated from the relation of size between R1 and R2 and the fine moving direction of the focusing lens. |
