PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hierarchical management file device which can efficiently record and reproduce files of a large size requiring continuous high-speed recording and reproduction and discrete files of a small size together and the electronic equipment equipped with it. SOLUTION: The recording area of an information recording medium is divided into clusters of areas 602 to 610, each cluster is subdivided into fragments shown by areas 611 to 618, and files are hierarchically recorded on and reproduced from the information recording medium by referring to a cluster FAT showing the association position relation among the respective clusters and the use states of the fragments, a fragment FAT showing connection information on the respective fragments, and a directory entry table totally managing the cluster FAT and fragment FAT.
