PURPOSE: A method for controlling the lamp of a refrigerator is provided to install a light emitting unit and a light receiving unit at the upper and the lower parts of a cavity for turning on the cavity lamp in case of not detecting light in the light receiving unit. CONSTITUTION: A controlling unit turns on a light emitting unit installed at the upper front part of a cavity. Then, the controlling unit decides if a light receiving unit receives the light emitted from the light emitting unit. Herein, the light receiving unit is installed at the lower front part of the cavity. If the light receiving unit receives the light, a cavity door is decided as being closed for turning off a lamp. If the light receiving unit does not receive the light, the cavity door is decided as being opened by a user to store or withdraw food in the cavity. Then, the cavity lamp is turned on by transferring a controlling signal to a driving unit of cavity lamp.
