PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a reflection or semitransmission type display element which has high luminance and low power consumption by improving the light use efficiency. SOLUTION: A fixed retarder layer (phase difference plate) 12 which delays the phase of incident light by λ/4 and a variable retarder layer (vertical alignment type liquid crystal layer) 15 which shifts the phase of the incident light by every λ/2 according to applied voltage are sandwiched between a polarizing plate 11 and a polarized light reflecting layer 18 of a cholesteric liquid crystal, etc. Further, a phase difference plate 25 and a polarizing plate 26 which convert the incident light into a circularly polarized component in the direction of selective reflection by the polarized light reflecting layer are arranged on the back side of the polarized light reflecting layer. |
