PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve reliability of a data rewriting operation for a magnetic tape through a retry operation when an error occurs in a read-after-write operation, and reduce a time period required for the retry operation. SOLUTION: An old data existing on a magnetic tape prior to overwriting is read out by a read head 2a, and the number of error tracks is checked by an external pointer generating section 5. A read head 2b reads out data that has just been written by a write head 2c, and an error check operation is performed by a read data control section 4 and an error correction section 6. Then, in the case where a data readout error is detected immediately after the writing operation, writing retry operations are performed by predetermined times. When the writing retry is not successfully performed within the predetermined times, a predetermined erase pattern is written onto the particular portion on the magnetic tape by the write head 2c, and the data is again written onto the magnetic tape, but this time in the succeeding region on the tape.
