The load cell has a base (2) which supports the upper part (3). The base and upper part are separated by an insulated layer (6)The underside of the upper parts has a pattern of columns (8). The areas (4) between the columns protrude downwards, slightly more than the columns. The base is machined to accommodate the column pattern. The greater the load on the cell, the greater the electrical capacitance between the two parts.
