The monitoring method and system detects abnormal conditions during the operation of a modulator system. In the modulator system, power pulses are derived by transferring energy across successive stages of a magnetic pulse compression network (110-122). As energy is transferred from one stage to the next, it is transferred at a faster rate than the previous energy transfer. As a result, the energy is transferred at higher peak power levels as the pulse moves through the compression network. Finally, when the energy pulse reaches the output of the modulator system, it can drive a load with a peak power consistent with the requirements of the load. A method and apparatus is described that detects abnormal conditions that may occur during operation of the modulator system. If an abnormal condition such as a fault in the load or modulator system itself is detected, the operation of the modulator circuit is immediately inhibited and the abnormal condition is brought to the attention of the operator of the system. Specifically, predetermined acceptable operating windows are defined by amplitude and temporal limits that are programmed into the circuits. If it is detected that the operation of the modulator system is not as specified by these limits, the method and apparatus of the present invention will inhibit the operation of the modulator system.
|
