The invention relates to a reinforcing element (1), notably for car body posts, which consists of a tube (2) enveloped by a foamable mass (5). The tube (2) is inserted into the rail so that the reinforcing element (1) is positioned by point-by-point contact of the inherently stiff mass (5) with the inner surface of the rail. The mass (5) is foamed in a drying oven. The quantity of mass (5) used is chosen such that the intermediate space between the tube (2) and the post is filled with foam as fully as possible. In this way the tube is intimately joined to the post, which in turn is massively reinforced by both the inserted tube and the foam. The above method considerably improves both static and dynamic stiffness of the car body without resulting in significant additional weight. The reinforcing elements (1) are easy to handle and can be used in a targeted manner in critical areas of the car body.
