The handling method uses a storage area (1) in which the sheet stacks (2) are stored in piles (3) and the number of stacks in a row may be varied as required. The stacks (2) are piled on a support pallet (4) and transfer of the stacks and pallets in the storage area is arranged by means of a straddle carrier (5). The straddle carrier is arranged to move along a railed track (6) and is equipped with a lift device capable of moving the sheet stacks with their pallets onto the storage piles (3). A handling apparatus (7) is equipped with transfer elements (9) suited for receiving sheet stacks from processing lines and forwarding them to further processing.
