The invention relates to a device for taking a smear from the human or animal body. The inventive device comprises a cladding tube (2) in which a swab carrier (1) is arranged in a longitudinally moveable manner. The distal end of said swab carrier is provided with a swab (4) and with an adjusting device (3) which is arranged at the proximal end of the device. The swab (4) can extend out of the cladding tube (2) or can be completely retracted into the same by actuating said adjusting device (3). The swab carrier (1) is at least comprised of a distal support part (10) and of a tubular proximal support part (11) which are detachably interconnected by a coupling part (12) that is inserted into said proximal support part (11). The coupling part extends toward the distal end and into a first recess (13) situated at the proximal end of the distal support part (10). In addition, the coupling part (12) locks the support parts together in the longitudinal direction thereof such that their connection can be detached by pulling the distal end of the coupling part (12) toward the proximal end and out the recess (13).
