Luminance signal generating means generates a luminance signal of each pixel according to the red, green, and blue signals of the pixel of a video signal. Measuring means measures the saturation of each pixel of the video signal. Compressing means compresses the luminance signal of each pixel and the red, green, and blue signals of the pixel in such a way as to change the luminance without changing the hue and saturation of the pixel according to the result of the measurement of the saturation of the pixel. Adjusting means adjusts, as necessary, the signal levels of the compressed red, green, and blue signals in such a way as to change the saturation without changing the hue and luminance of the pixel. Thus, compression of the red, green, and blue signals is carried out while greatly reducing the discoloration of the pixels without changing the color tone of the video, and as a result the quality of picture is improved. |
