PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify a structure and miniaturize a device by forming a staple means in the two-piece structure where a drive-side mechanism for driving a staple needle is placed under a sheet transportation passage and a passive-side mechanism for clinching the staple needle is arranged over the sheet transportation passage. SOLUTION: A passive-side mechanism (upper mechanism 501A) for clinching a staple needle of the depth-side staple means 501 is loaded on a movable carriage 501C. The upper mechanism 501A is movable in the width direction (direction orthogonal to a recording a paper transportation direction) of recording paper S together with the carriage 501C. A drive-side mechanism (lower mechanism) for driving the staple needle of the staple means 501 allows a parallel biding at a sheet end and a diagonal biding at a sheet end, and can be positioned and stopped at each stopping position by a click stop mechanism. The upper mechanism 501A and the lower mechanism are rotable up to a position of about 45 deg. rotation angle around the vertical center of a driving position of the staple needle SP1.
