PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the increase in conversion errors due to the difference in the characteristics of each area in color conversion between first color space and second color conversion by dividing the color space (first color space) of an input color image into plural areas, so as to obtain a conversion matrix parameter to the color space (second color space) of an output color picture by each divided areas of them. SOLUTION: A third color space dividing means 6 divides each divided areas of an inputted color space divided by a first color space dividing means 4 and divided by a second color space dividing means 5, into respectively independent areas by additionally cutting off a range of one of the values of brightness, saturation and hue which are the three color attributes. In addition, an overlapped area is set in the neighborhood of the boundary of each divided area. A parameter calculation means 7 extracts a pair of conversion data for each dividing area from a color conversion data base 2 and applies the method of least squares to calculate the conversion matrix parameter which is most proper statistically.
