PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a self-heating type method for reforming a supplied hydrocarbon material containing higher hydrocarbons, capable of reforming the hydrocarbon material without generating soot. SOLUTION: This self-heating type method for reforming a supplied hydrocarbon material containing higher hydrocarbons by reforming the supplied hydrocarbon material containing a higher hydrocarbons in the presence of a catalyst in a self-heating type reformer further contains the following steps: (a) a step for passing the supplied hydrocarbon material through a reactor containing a steam reformation catalyst to eliminate or reduce the content of the higher hydrocarbons contained in the supplied hydrocarbon material, (b) a step for transferring a flow discharged from the first reactor to the self-heating type reformer, and (c) a step for recovering the generated gas plentifully containing hydrogen and carbon monoxide from the self-heating type reformer.
