PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the power consumption of a back light even in normal operation. SOLUTION: The display device comprises a display part 3 which has display areas 3a to 3g and makes a display by varying the intensity of transmitted light and a back light 10 which is arranged behind the display part 3 and performs surface light emission by applying high-frequency electric power to its internal high-dielectric material to supply the emitted light to the display part 3. The back light 10 is composed of light emission areas 10a to 10g which are able to emit lights individually and equipped with a light emission intensity varying means which individually varies the light emission intensity of the light emission areas 10a to 10g corresponding to the display areas 3a to 3g associatively with the display contents of the display part 3.
