PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the durability of a belt portion by preventing the separation of the edge of a belt layer. SOLUTION: This heavy load pneumatic radial tire has belt layers 5a, 5b, 5c, 5d formed of at least three layers of steel cords and arranged outside a carcass layer 4 in a tread 1, a belt edge cushion rubber 6 laid between the ends in the cross direction of two layers of belt layers 5b, 5c with the cords traversing each other out of the belt layers and an edge tape 7 for covering the ends in the cross direction of two belt layers 5b, 5c ranging from the inner face to the outer face, the belt edge cushion rubber 6 and the edge tape 7 being formed of specified rubber compositions, respectively, and having predetermined 100% modulus and breaking elongation.
