PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin type escalator provided with a step return path contributing to the safety and efficiency of work by forming a stable foothold when the maintenance inspection of a machine inside is carried out. SOLUTION: Traveling is carried in such a manner that in the going path of the step 5 of an escalator 1, the surface of a tread is set as a horizontal step and, in the return path thereof, the surface of the tread is set as a roughly horizontal step. In a portion for parallel half rolling from the going to the return path of the step 5 or from the return to the going path, a step half rolling auxiliary mechanism 10 having a rotor 10C brought into contact with the step 5 to roll the same is provided.
