PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce constant torque, regardless of the state of winding of the spring of a spring motor by wholly or linearly varying the width of the spring over the range from one end to the other end of the spring, to make spring force proportional to the width of the spring and the produced torque proportional to the product of spring force and radius. SOLUTION: A motor 10 is provided with a pair of drums or spools 14 and 16 which holds a flat tempered spring 18 forming a narrow metal strip. The spring 18 varies in width over the length of the spring 18, with its width being narrowest at the end of the spring 18 connected to the winding spool 16 and wider at its end connected to the crank-up spool 14. As a result, the outermost layer of the spring is narrowest, when the spring is reeled on the crank-up spool 14 and thereafter the inner layers are successively increased in width. Since the spring force is in proportion to the width, variations in width are equivalent to variations in force, and torque becomes constant, thus the speed of the generator generates a constant voltage.
