PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reliably retrieve a telephone number with a simple operation. SOLUTION: This telephone set 10 with a telephone directory retrieval function is provided with an operation section 12, that accepts an entry from a user, a memory 13, a control section 14, and an ADPCM code/voice conversion section 15 that converts ADPCM data received from the control section 14 into a voice message. The memory 13 consists of a telephone directory data area M1, a KANA (Japanese syllabary) ADPCM data area M2 and a numeric ADPCM data area M3. The control section 14 is provided with a means that provides the voice output of a guidance or the like to the user, a means that decides a line to which the initial KANA letter of the name of a called party belongs, a means that retrieves the name belonging to this line from the telephone directory data area M1, and a means that reads each character configuring the decided name from the KANA ADPCM data area M2 successively and also successively reads each numeric letter configuring the telephone number, corresponding to this name from the numeric ADPCM data area M3.
