PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the time required for detecting an object by detecting the traveling direction of a vehicle at an intersection, deciding the detecting direction of the object based on the traveling direction of the vehicle and then detecting the object existing in the decided direction. SOLUTION: A navigation system 11 specifies the current position of a vehicle by means of a GRS(global positioning system) device, a wheel speed sensor 1 and a turning angle sensor 12. Then, it is judged whether the vehicle is positioned before an intersection based on the map data stored in a CD-ROM included in the system 11 and also on the current position of the vehicle. If the vehicle is positioned before the intersection, it is judged whether a winker 10 indicates the right/left turn. If the right/left turn is indicated by the winker 10, the inside of the intersection is scanned by a scan type laser radar 6 to detect a preceding vehicle. Then the distance is kept constant between the vehicle and its preceding vehicle.
