PURPOSE: A method for managing a data packet of a cable modem is provided so that the data packet can be managed on the basis of its loss sensitive information and delay sensitive information. CONSTITUTION: In the initialization process of a cable modem, loss sensitive information and delay sensitive information are specified on each data packet according to quality of service. In the operation process of the cable modem, when some of the data packets stored in a buffer and a memory must be abandoned, the data packets to be abandoned are selected on the basis of their loss sensitive information and delay sensitive information. In addition, when the data packets stored in the buffer and memory must be transmitted, the data packets to be transmitted are selected on the basis of their loss sensitive information and delay sensitive information. That is, the data packets are not selected and abandoned or transmitted at random, thereby efficiently satisfying the requisites of the services sensitive to loss or delay.
