PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an area extracting method by which the expanding condition used when an area expanding method is used can be found easily in processing the extraction of an area of interest. SOLUTION: A feature amount is detected from the gray level of picture elements existing in a prescribed area near a designated location and area expansion is performed by using the feature amount. Then a new feature amount is detected with respect to the expanded area and an expanding condition is decided, based on the feature amount when the expanded area meets a convergence condition. Here, the feature amount is, for example, the average error or maximum error of the minimum and maximum values of the picture elements at the designated location and its circumference and the gray level differences between the picture elements and their adjacent picture elements. |
