The current sensor has a magnet core (3), a primary coil (2) for a primary current to be measured and at least one secondary coil (4). A measurement circuit (5-14) delivers a voltage signal to the secondary coil, which varies periodically according to the primary current. The secondary current derived from the voltage signal drives the magnet core to saturation in at least one direction. An overcontrol of the current sensor can be determined by evaluating the length of the half-wave of the voltage signal in the measurement circuit.
